spent grains

I have an opportunity to acquire, over a prolonged period of time, as much spent grains as i want from a local brewery where a nephew of mine finds himself a master brewer. I am wondering if anyone here has ever used them just as top dressing for soils, or has other direct experience utilizing them in larger quantity in an orchard? I would think the nitrogen levels in them would be high, and I have some concerns about it becoming vole food.

My issue as far as amounts available to me are more of logistics, as the brewery is several hundred miles from the orchard, but thousands of pounds apparently are available on a regular basis to me.
