11 y/o Pear that doesn't bloom
April 18, 2019 10:04PM
Anyone have ideas on this mystery? We have a Potomac Pear planted in 2008. Looks overall vigorous and healthy. No apparent disease or stress on it or any of our other pears.

And yet. Last year it produced 2 blossoms. This year we count 3.

While we have some soil nutrition issues to nudge in the right direction, other fruit trees near by are producing ok. So that doesn't seem like the answer.

Any ideas?

The adage to plant pears for your heirs is at play here, Josh!

I used to think that meant pears will live and bear a long, long time (which is true) but now have come to understand it also can mean its the next generation that will get the fruit. I have trees going on ten years old with nary a blossom. This may be a north country factor as trees grow slower in Zone 4. Then again I have several pears (Summercrisp, Luscious, Patten) that are bearing nicely at twenty plus years old. Hmmm. That's exactly the age of my daughter, the heir.

oh, gulp! I had no idea. This is what I get for being an heir myself - the privileged spoils of time.

great to know, Michael - thanks!
