thwarting the sapsucker

These birds are getting way carried away .. I'm wondering if tree paste would serve as a deterrent ... very old Bosc pear.

does the sapsucker pose a real threat?

I have lost the top of my one St. Edmund's Russet tree to this damn bird. The "one blessing" in this is the fanatical commitment by sapsucker to this variety. Everything else is basically untouched.
