So my order is short about 40 trees on my preferred rootstock (b 118). The nursery can deliver the same variety on mm 106. We have heavy soil, ok drainage and collar rot is a problem in Pennsylvania. I'm thinking I should wait but I'm wondering how others have faired with 106. Should I just go ahead with the substitution?

Hi Nat,

I think that Bud 118 is superior to MM106 since you are concerned about Collar Rot. Bud 118 is basically 'seedling' in it's mature size vs the MM106 being about 70%. I am assuming you also want a larger tree.

Waiting an 1 extra year to get your varieties desired custom grafted onto the root stock you really want will be time well spent. You can continue preparations for the trees to come; holistic soil building, nutrient tuning, irrigation, fencing, and more.

With your multi-decade commitment to an excellent new orchard, I think getting the rootstock you want is very important. I recommend that you don't compromise.

Good luck
