Travelling in France these days to present my new book to French cider makers, I stumbled on this very odd shaped apple tree. Someone back 40 or 50 years ago really did something special!

Looks like a sound borer strategy to me . . . essentially a dozen trees on one trunk!

As a guess, I bet this was originally an espalier...the supporting structure or wall, now gone.
