Hi Rachel
I have been monitoring for BMSB by sight only. I have a few native stink bugs that are occational visitors to my orchards, and I have taken samples of those (by catching them with a small net or taking photos) and then keying them out. So far, no BMSB confirmed here at my place in Grass Valley, CA . . . that said, I am highly confident that they will show up soon enough.

There was an excellent BMSB trap study performed a few years back by USDA-ARS
[www.stopbmsb.org].
Cornell and UC Davis have both also completed expentensive research on these nasties. Plus check in with your regional or county Ag Commissioner as they may have some great trap recommendations that are working your immediate area too.

Continuing the conversation on this as we have had our first measurable BMSB damage this fall. The University of Wisconsin - Madison has been monitoring with traps at our orchard for the past few years as well. This year numbers have increased greatly which aligns with the damage we are seeing on fruit.
What are our east coast friends doing for BMSB? Anyone having success with perimeter trap cropping with sunflowers, etc.? I'm pessimistic about managing this new pet holistically or even with organic materials. Hoping to hear of someone finding a good, sustainable solution.

Just watching a great eOrganic webinar on trap cropping for BMSB. We are thinking of implementing something like this. No one has any experience? I'm led to believe that the east coast (NY, NJ, PA particularly) are overrun...

Another piece of the puzzle is assisting Samurai wasps, an avid predator of BMSB.
Growers in New York State can sign up for a shipment of samurai wasps this coming growing season:

These wasps are showing up in more and more places as they follow stink bug in its journey across America. Maryland came first, where it apparently showed up on its own, probably via a parasitized BMSB egg mass present in cargo shipped from Asia. In 2015, the samurai wasp was also detected in Virginia, Delaware, and Washington State. In 2016, it was detected in New Jersey, New York, and Oregon. In 2017, it was detected in Pennsylvania. Someday, Liz, it will be in Wisconsin too!
