Honeygold has been a great yellow apple for our northern orchard up until this last winter! We had a test winter here in North Dakota - 35°. I had 3 to 4 year old trees die completely down to the snow line. Older trees are severally set back! Hope they pull through!by Trevon Unruh - Apples
Sounds familiar! We had a very mild fall and then a foot of snow first of November. Nov. 12 we had -15F. Most varieties had frozen leaves still on this spring. I had 15 Wedge whips stone dead, 1 Bonkers with extreme die back, 2 Sweet Sixteen and one Wolf River with very reduce vigor. Honeycrisp came through with flying colors. Has anyone used beeswax as a bench graft sealer? I've used Treekote asphalt emulsion in the past with great success but beeswax seems to be a more organic way to go. I've just started grafting and I melt the wax in a small crock pot seams to be working great! Zone 3-4? North Dakotaby Trevon Unruh - Grafting
We press around 100 gal. Of cider a year. We buy our 1 gallon plastic jugs from our local supermarket. They stock them for their in store water purifier sales. Their empty jug price is .49 cents! I just talked to their store manager and he's willing to special order them by the case. Best price I've found. Zone 3b-4a? In North Dakotaby Trevon Unruh - Just Talk
Does anyone have experience with silver leaf infection in apple trees? I have a eighth year old honeycrisp which exhibits classic sighns. Several infected branches, dark heartwood in infected branches. Should I prune of infected branches and see what happens next year or bite the bullet and remove the tree from the orchard.by Trevon Unruh - Fungal Pathogens
